Chairman's Comments

Dear Friends

Enclosed with the printed version of this newsletter is our annual report which gives you an outline of the progress of the charity over the past year.

Some of our members maybe be under the impression that our AGM isn’t worth attending as the it is probably just another boring meeting. Believe me this is not the case! The meeting not only gives more interesting detail of the charity’s work but it is always followed by a talk by at least one of the Yorkshire Heart Centre consultants which is always fascinating.

This year the talk was about the work of cardiac echo and also the piece of equipment we are providing for this department. I think everyone at the meeting was enthralled with this talk given by Consultant Dr Dominik Schlosshan. A night which everyone enjoyed so maybe next year, you might think about joining us at our AGM.

Your charity makes so much happen at the Yorkshire Heart Centre and we are currently funding projects on Ward 16, Ward 18 and Ward 11 together with other small projects. If you are able why not come along to one of our coffee mornings in the hospital and hear more detail of our work at the general meeting which follows. Just a reminder that we always have a member of staff available if you wish to discuss any concerns you might have.

Our contract with Hospedia which provides free bedside television is working well and patients now have added TV channels and a very much appreciated new service which allows patients to make free outgoing calls to 01, 02 and 03 landline numbers.

To close my comments a big thank you to you all for continuing with your generous donations your fund raising efforts and remembering us in so many ways. It is going to be a tough year but you can count on us to make every penny count to support our work

Colin Pullan MBE
Chairman

Treasurer's Trove

First of all I would like to thank everyone who wrote to me with regard to the query I had in the last newsletter about the donation I had received from a Mr Andrew Poughton. I found out that the James Cook was a Hospital in Middleborough, but the reason for the donation still remains a mystery. Thank you all once more.

It`s a busy time of the year for me at the moment as I am receiving all the money from the sponsored walk and whilst I like to think I can acknowledge all the donations, I can`t for various reasons, usually no details of addresses. We do our best however, and I can only apologise in advance if you don`t hear from me with a thank you note.

The next time I write it will be for the Christmas Newsletter, and despite it only being September when I`m writing this it will be upon us before we know it. With this in mind I would just like to mention two little things to do. The first one is with regard to the sending of cards. Quite a few people are sending a donation in lieu of sending cards but for it to go onto the donations listings which will be sent out immediately after the Christmas Draw which this year falls on the 3rd of December. To get your Christmas greeting in the newsletter we will need to know by the 14th of November which is my date for cut off to be included in the newsletter. The second little thing is connected to the Christmas Draw tickets we send out. We do make mistakes and send them to people who don`t want them, but if you are one of these people, please don`t send them back as we have to pay any postage due plus a one pound handling charge. Last year these returns cost us just short of £100.00

Thank you,

A J McLean
Treasurer

HALL OF FAME

Over the year, these magnificent people have performed sponsored events for Take Heart. Running marathons, swimming, running across a continent, jumping out of aeroplanes – you name it, they’ve done it!

They all have a story to tell about why they have done what they have done, but it’s all tied in with gratitude to the exceptional care provided by the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds General Infirmary and to Take Heart for making life just a little more comfortable and bearable while they, or their loved ones were being treated.

They signed up to Virgin Giving and, together with other donations through that source have raised collectively this year to date, the magnificent sum of £6851.50.

2011 Sponsored Walk

Sunday 4th September was kind to us as usual. Sunshine interspersed with occasional near-rain, kept the temperature absolutely ideal for our 23rd Sponsored Walk in the beautiful setting of Roundhay Park in Leeds.
Although the numbers walking were slightly down on last year, several hundred turned up to walk around the park to raise much needed money for our charity. Men, women, children and dogs joined in, making a tremendous atmosphere for the day. Our stalls in the Mansion were kept busy and the day returned a satisfying amount of money. Full details will be published soon when our treasurer has added everything up!

On this day of all days, it is gratifying and humbling to see the esteem in which our charity is held by walkers, many of whom are ex-patients and relatives of patients of the Yorkshire Heart Centre, clearly celebrating the fact that they have been given a life extension by the skills and expertise of the YHC staff.

Most of the trustees of Take Heart, who are all volunteers, are in this position as well. Long may we all continue to be able to make a difference for the patients and staff of the Yorkshire Heart Centre.

Click here for the photographs of the walk.

P.S. A little note from one of our walkers:

A few weeks ago I completed the 23rd annual walk for Take heart. I always look forward to finishing and receiving my medal then I always make a point of thanking all those who have sponsored me.

On going to see a friend who sponsored me for the first time, she said “Sally you have made my Day.” After a few hugs and kisses, I bid her farewell and as I walked away the words from the old song came to me “It’s the little things that mean a lot.”

My thanks to Take heart - you mean a lot to me.

BEDSIDE TELEVISION

In addition to dozens of TV channels provided free by Take Heart on the bedside TV’s of every Heart patient, we now provide free national Landline telephone calls on the bedside phones as well. One more expense you don’t have to worry about!

SMILE

I used to spend my time trying to remember what I was supposed to be doing so I decided to write down everything. Now I spend most of my time trying to remember where I’ve put the pieces of paper.

**

A doctor examining a woman who had been rushed to the A&E, took the husband aside, and said, 'I don't like the looks of your wife at all.'
'Me neither doc,' said the husband. 'But she's a great cook and really good with the kids.'

**

A man is recovering from surgery when the nurse appears and asks him how he is feeling.
'I'm O. K.. But I didn't like the four-letter-word the doctor used in surgery,' he answered.
'What did he say,' asked the nurse.
'Oops!'

NEW TRUSTEES

We need new trustees to help run our Charity – in fact, we have vacancies for six at the moment.

The trustees are vital to Take Heart and you would find the commitment and work involved very satisfying. Many of you enjoy a better life style, given to you by the surgeons and staff at the LGI, so can you repay them by supporting your charity and consider being a trustee?

The work of being a trustee isn’t demanding. We hold a number of committee meetings (approximately one a month) and other activities we undertake include our promotional stall in the reception area of the hospital selling various items, coffee mornings, collecting days, newsletters plus many other items to promote Take Heart.

Because of the six vacancies we have at present, it becomes hard on the other trustees to cover all the various activities, so this is why we need new trustees.

All the work is voluntary and unpaid but we are fortunate in having the commitment of everyone to ensure the continuation of the worthwhile function of the charity.

Our AGM is in June so why not think seriously about becoming a trustee?
The Chairman and any other trustee would be willing to talk to you about what is involved and if necessary arrange for a visit to one of our committee meetings – without any obligation whatever.

So have we got your attention on this very important message?

Are you going to volunteer as a trustee?

Please consider this seriously and if you feel you could consider being a trustee, please contact us. The closing date for applications is June 1st 2011.

NB. If you do not wish to be involved as a trustee, would you still like to be involved as a volunteer to help in various functions?
