Chairman's
Comments
Dear
Friends
It’s that time of year again when I need to inform you
of our forthcoming Annual General Meeting.
Every
year we have a small number of members who attend the AGM, but
we would like to see many more. Why not try to come along and
hear first hand about what we have done in the past year. There
is always an interesting subject about the work and new procedures
being used at the Yorkshire Heart Centre as well.
It’s
a pleasant evening and of course light nights and easy parking
if you are driving. Complimentary light refreshments are provided
and we have usually concluded by 9pm. Full details are on the
enclosed flyer.
Once
again can I appeal to any one who has some time to seriously
consider becoming a trustee of Take Heart. The charity needs
continuation as some of us (including myself) are not getting
any younger and we definitely need some ‘younger blood.’
Perhaps those who have either retired or semi retired would
have a little time to spare.
We
need to have people to continue our work to ensure Take Heart
can continue to operate on a voluntary basis and remain the
well loved charity that it is.
If you would like some information on what is involved please
give us a ring you won’t be under any obligation or pressure.
Our
Treasurer keeps threatening to retire and would love to teach
someone the systems and work that he does! We also have a vacancy
for an assistant treasurer. Anyone out there with accounting
and book keeping skills? If so, please give us a ring.
Just
think, you could join a team in helping to bring so much to
so many patients at the Yorkshire Heart Centre. It’s such
a rewarding and pleasant experience enjoyed by all our trustees
and volunteers.

Treasurer's
Trove
The
audit of the account has now been completed so it`s that time
of the year to invite you to our AGM held at the LGI on Monday
the 6th of June. A copy of the auditors report will be available
at this meeting.
The amount of the donations for the period covered by this newsletter
have been tremendous. It is mostly down to legacies left to
the charity, we received a completed one for £56,727.00
and another for an interim payment of £50.000. This leaves
donations of £17,826.16 from other sources. I always say
in my letters to donors that without their generous donations
we wouldn`t be able to continue with our work but it is so true.
Thank you.
It is a sad time for Take Heart at the moment as we have just
lost our long time Assistant Treasurer – Jack Calvert.
As soon as he became a Trustee Jack volunteered for the job.
He was a tireless worker and took on many fund raising functions
as well as his work with me. For years he looked after the Christmas
Draw and I know that he and Brenda , his wife, spent many “happy”
hours splitting the tickets ready for the draw at the infirmary.
We used to sell about £12,000.00 worth of tickets (5 to
a book) so you can imagine what a long job that could be. He
will be missed.

Jack
Calvert

A tribute to our Trustee and friend
who died on 24th April 2011
Jack
became involved with Take Heart in 1992 when he became
Assistant Treasurer. He held that post until 2010 when
he stood down because of ill health.
However
he still insisted on remaining a Trustee of our charity
and was still in service even up to his death.
During his Nineteen years of service with the Take heart
Charity, he ran our Christmas Draw for many years and
arranged many events such as Bowling competitions and
Cabaret evenings in various clubs helping to raise many
tens of thousands of pounds.
Jack
was a lovely man and totally dedicated in his work for
Take Heart. He was always at the front offering to do
any task.
He
will be so very much missed and he is a great loss to
our charity.
Together
with all the Trustees, I would like to offer my condolences
to Brenda and all the family. They should be very proud
of Jack for the wonderful work he did in helping many
thousands of patients at The Yorkshire Heart Centre

All
wrapped up in Scarves

Ms Lillian Phillips of Headingly has, over
the years, knitted hundreds of scarves for the benefit of Take
Heart. Her efforts have raised many hundreds of pounds by selling
them to friends and neighbours and supplying our stall.
I was pleased to meet Lillian at the LGI on the morning she
was to be admitted for a procedure and receive further funds
from her. She’s an amazing lady - 91 years young!
Her
fame is world wide having knitted a scarf for the Pope, the
Dalai Lama and many other famous people.
She
asked me to say a big thank you to all her friends and neighbours
who have provided so much wool and helped with her sales sales.
She loves knitting and hopes to continue in supporting our Take
Heart charity.
Lillian,
who is blind, has a wonderful sense of humour and showed this
as she cheerfully left to have her procedure at the Yorkshire
Heart Centre.

Huddersfield District Association Caravan Club

Once again I was invited to the AGM of the Huddersfield District
Association Caravan Club and had great pleasure in accepting
a cheque for the sum of £515.99. This had been raised
over the past year by the members with various fund raising
events at caravan meets and club meetings.
The
cheque was presented to me by the chair of the club Mrs Lesley
Cobb and following the presentation, I was able to thank every
one and to tell them about the work of Take Heart over the past
year.

Children’s Centre Event

Adele Illingworth
A Take Heart day was held at the library organized by our members
Mrs Adele Illingworth and her mum, Mrs Maureen Stankiewicz who
had heart surgery at the Yorkshire Heart Centre. The event was
in appreciation of the wonderful care she received and they
were assisted by friends of the Northowram and Shelf Readers
Club.
Our
chairman and I, together with our wives, went along to show
some support and we were amazed at the number of people passing
through, enjoying the games and buying all sorts of items, many
kindly donated by local businesses.
Adele
herself could not believe how well supported the event was and
how generous people were. We were all astounded when Adele came
along to the Yorkshire Heart Centre and presented us with a
cheque for the sum of £970. A big thank you to all involved
for all the hard work in helping to raise such a lovely amount.

JOCELYN
RAN THE LONDON MARATHON FOR US

Jocelyn Payne ran the London Marathon in April. She did this
to raise money for Take Heart and her reasons are very moving.
A young friend of hers, Calum Wass, sadly passed away in the
summer of 2010 due to a heart condition. Calum's family highly
praised the support which Take Heart gave them over their very
difficult time.
Jocelyn ran the marathon in memory of Cal and to date has raised
the magnificient sum of £922.16 for Take Heart through
Virgin Giving.
Thank you so much Jocelyn. It is heartbreaking to hear of events
like this although we take comfort from the fact that we were
able to help a little.

NEW
TRUSTEES
We
need new trustees to help run our Charity – in fact, we
have vacancies for six at the moment.
The
trustees are vital to Take Heart and you would find the commitment
and work involved very satisfying. Many of you enjoy a better
life style, given to you by the surgeons and staff at the LGI,
so can you repay them by supporting your charity and consider
being a trustee?
The
work of being a trustee isn’t demanding. We hold a number
of committee meetings (approximately one a month) and other
activities we undertake include our promotional stall in the
reception area of the hospital selling various items, coffee
mornings, collecting days, newsletters plus many other items
to promote Take Heart.
Because
of the six vacancies we have at present, it becomes hard on
the other trustees to cover all the various activities, so this
is why we need new trustees.
All
the work is voluntary and unpaid but we are fortunate in having
the commitment of everyone to ensure the continuation of the
worthwhile function of the charity.
Our
AGM is in June so why not think seriously about becoming a trustee?
The Chairman and any other trustee would be willing to talk
to you about what is involved and if necessary arrange for a
visit to one of our committee meetings – without any obligation
whatever.
So
have we got your attention on this very important message?
Are
you going to volunteer as a trustee?
Please
consider this seriously and if you feel you could consider being
a trustee, please contact us. The closing date for applications
is June 1st 2011.
NB.
If you do not wish to be involved as a trustee, would you still
like to be involved as a volunteer to help in various functions?

THE INTERNET
AND
VIRGIN MONEY GIVING

Take Heart recently changed its method of accepting donations
and sponsorship on the internet by signing up with Virgin Money
Giving and this is proving to be an excellent move.
In the short space of time we have been with Virgin, we have
received thousands of pounds in donations and even better, Virgin
claim ‘Gift Aid’ for us from the Inland Revenue
and pay this extra amount to us with absolutely no hassle whatever.
This makes a tremendous difference – as an example, our
front page story about Jocelyn who ran the London Marathon for
us showed that she raised £922.16 for. The actual amount
donated was £755 and the rest was from Gift Aid so you
can see how much it means to the charity. Unlike nearly every
other collection site for charity on the internet, Virgin make
no charges to us apart from our initial signing up fee. Take
a bow Richard Branson!
Everything is made a lot easier these days by using the internet.
Go to our website at www.takeheart.net and you can join Take
Heart, make a donation with a simple click, order goodies from
our shop range, or sponsor someone like Jocelyn who is taking
part in an event to raise funds for Take Heart.
