writes an open letter as follows:
The Marathon Des Sables 2011 -
The toughest foot race on the planet.
A
few years back I viewed a programme on BBC2 of a documentary concerning
the Marathon Des Sables. I found myself inspired by what I was witnessing.
In the following months I researched what is involved in competing
in the event and in turn how one would go about doing this.
The
itinerary involves competing in the equivalent of 5.5 marathons
in six days across the Sahara desert. The course changes from year
to year but the 2003 event was as follows:
•
Day 1 – 25 kms, day 2 – 34 kms, day 3 – 38 kms,
day 4 – 82 kms, day 5 – 42 kms, day 6 – 22 kms.
This totals an approximate of 230kms.
•
Throughout the duration of the event a competitor will have to endure
temperatures of 86 -120 degrees F during the daylights hours and
40 – 58 degrees F at night. The terrain varies from sand dunes,
rocky desert, stony ground etc. Each competitor has to be self-sufficient
during racing hours and is therefore required to carry a pack containing
supplies for survival in the desert.
It
became clear to me that if I were to undertake this challenge then
it would be appropriate to associate it with fund raising for a
charity. My chosen charity is the Take Heart charity part of the
Yorkshire Heart Centre at the Leeds General Infirmary.
My
Dad was a patient in the wards supported by Take Heart funding where
he eventually lost his battle with heart disease in 2008. I would
like to pay back some of the support he was given whilst benefiting
from the funding raised by Take Heart. Therefore all money raised
will go to the John Myers BEM Memorial Fund c/o Take Heart.
Although
the event last six days the preparation for those monumental days
will take much longer. My training starts as of now, which will
comprise of gym work, swimming, golf, my usual dose of football
practice and Sunday league football with 2 weekly runs thrown in.
Over the coming months I will be training towards competing in first
of all 10k runs, then ½ marathons during 2009 and eventually
full marathons in 2010. This build up will allow me to enter the
British endurance marathon event, the British Ultra 2010 which will
allow me to accustom myself with multi day endurance racing. Obviously
the level of training will increase in the lead up to the MDS in
April 2011 with more emphasis given to running. I have sourced a
training programme followed by the Royal Logistic Corp team in their
build up to the 2003 MDS which I will follow. This starts in the
June 2010 (43 weeks) prior to the event and consists of runs starting
from 3 times a week building up to 5 times a week at varying distances
with and without the rucksack for company. This will be without
doubt the toughest event I have and will ever face but I committed
to competing to the best of my ability. Although for me the event
is not intended to be a race to the line to win as finishing the
‘toughest foot race on the planet’ will be challenging
enough.
All
money raised from individuals such as you will be raised directly
to benefit Take Heart. I am covering the entry costs myself together
with any cooperate sponsorship I receive. I would ask anyone wishing
to sponsor me for this event to email me direct at martinpm_0@hotmail.com
with your details and intent to sponsor as I will not be collecting
donations for this event for sometime. I will post an update on
this page when I do start collecting and will get in touch with
you directly if you have pledged a donation.

THE
ANNUAL JOHN MYERS BEM MEMORIAL GOLF DAY AT CALVERLEY GOLF CLUB
During
his life my dad was a very keen golfer and spent many good years
playing as a member at Calverley Golf Club. With the help of the
club I have arranged a memorial day (the John Myers memorial stableford)
on Saturday 19 July 2008 which will be a yearly event. The event
will be used as an opportunity to raise funds on behalf of Take
Heart.
Funds
will be raised through a portion of the competition entry being
donated to the charity and the Captain has kindly donated his
charity bunker fund for the day. There will also be collection
boxes placed around the club on the day. If anyone participating
would like to make an online donation please follow the instructions
above on donating.
The
club will present the trophies (the Myers Stableford for the junior
winner, the Myers Cup for the Division 1 winner and the Myers
Plate for the Division 2 winner) for the winners of the day at
the clubs annual prize presentation dinner on Saturday 15th November
2008.
I
would like to thank all members of Calverley Golf Club and in
particular Neil Wendall Jones, John Brookes, Chris Wren and the
Captain for all their goodwill and help.

FOR TAKE HEART
The
Chris Hoy Edinburgh Half Marathon - Sunday 5th April 2009
The picturesque Firth of Forth coastline forms the backdrop to this
scenic Half Marathon. The big race takes place on Sunday 5th April
2009. With a new course for 2009, which starts in a more central
location in Edinburgh on the track at Meadowbank Stadium, this new
route will take runners out of central Edinburgh to the Firth of
Forth coast at Portobello before heading southwards towards a grandstand
finish at Musselburgh Racecourse.
